ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – A new program to offer unhoused individuals paid work in St. Louis City is now getting thousands of dollars in funding.

The St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (SLATE) awarded a $450,000 grant to Peter and Paul Community Services. The money will go towards launching an unemployment program for the unhoused in St. Louis City.

The program is for those 18 and older. The paid work will include cleaning parks and beautifying city streets for $15 an hour. Roughly 100 participants will receive cash payments and assistance to transition to stable employment over the course of October 2024 to September 2025. Participants are required to be living at a homeless shelter in St. Louis.

The funding comes from the American Rescue Plan (ARP).

Cathy Connors, the executive director of Gateway 180, a homeless shelter, and chair of St. Louis City Continuum of Care, a membership organization comprised of more than 100 organizations and individuals from the private and public sector who work in partnership to prevent and end homelessness in the City of St. Louis, said there are roughly 2100 unhoused individuals in St. Louis.

She said shelters had to turn away about 450 individuals in August, because there are only 500 or so emergency beds in the city.
