This spring, a critical new resource joined the Peter & Paul Community Campus, helping fill an often-overlooked gap on the path from homelessness to stability. Through a partnership with Three Steps Home, the Campus now offers medical recuperative care, sometimes called medical respite care, for people experiencing homelessness who need a safe place to recover after a hospital stay.
For most people, recovering from surgery, illness, or injury means returning home to rest, follow medical instructions, and receive support from family or friends. But for someone experiencing homelessness, recovery can be far more complicated. Without stable housing or a support network, even a routine discharge from the hospital can become a barrier to healing.
“The transformative partnership between Three Steps Home and Peter & Paul Community Services [PPCS] helps us to tackle a critical gap in healthcare and housing with some of our most vulnerable populations,” said Sonia Deal, CEO of Three Steps Home. “Our partnership allows unhoused individuals who are discharged from the hospital, and are far too frail to recover on the streets, to receive medical recovery care and easily transition to supportive housing within the same building at Peter & Paul. This collaboration aids in the seamless transition of housing and wrap-around services for the unhoused.”

Too often, patients experiencing homelessness are discharged from hospitals with nowhere appropriate to recover. Some return to shelters that may not be equipped to support their medical needs, while others have no safe place to go at all. In some cases, hospitals are forced to keep patients longer than medically necessary because there is no suitable discharge option available. The result is poorer health outcomes for patients and increased strain on healthcare systems.
